My Internship experience at the MOHAN Foundation : A Semester Of Growth

by Niya Viji Puthusseri

A single organ donor can save up to 8 lives- this is what I learnt on my first day working as an intern at the MOHAN foundation. From that moment on I knew that my experience was going to be different and here is what it looked like

Since school I’ve been intrigued about organ donation, legal aspects, how it works etc. Organ donation remains a critical yet often overlooked aspect of the Indian healthcare system. The MOHAN Foundation, a pioneering non-profit in this field, has been at the forefront of raising awareness and enabling life-saving transplants across the country. So when I got the opportunity to work for MOHAN foundation for three weeks I couldn’t be happier

My journey began with an insightful orientation session led by our Project Director, Mrs. Jaya Jairam, which gave me a clear understanding of our mission. Soon after, I created a heart-touching presentation on Deyaan, Maharashtra’s youngest organ donor – a story that truly moved me. I also worked on a whiteboard sketch video that explained organ donation in a fun, kid-friendly way, making the message more accessible to younger audiences.

One of my key responsibilities during the internship was to analyze the MOHAN Foundation’s social media presence and contribute to improving its online impact. I closely collaborated with our social media manager – sitting down with her to understand the existing interface, content and audience behavior from the ground up. This helped me gain information about our digital strategy while allowing me to suggest growth-oriented suggestions, thus making a report on it. From brainstorming content ideas to developing a posting schedule, I played an active role in stocking up on engaging content and suggesting strategies that could boost reach and consistency.

A memory that will forever be in my heart is when me and my fellow intern gave a seminar on the importance of organ/ tissue donation at the Carmel of St Joseph school. We educated the students on the topic of organ/tissue donation, spreading awareness about it, pledging, volunteering, etc. The genuine curiosity in the children’s questions during the Q&A session filled me with a deep sense of fulfillment. Connecting with them on such an important topic sparked something in me – it was a moment that truly left an impact.

This internship taught me more than I expected – from improving my public speaking skills to gaining a deeper understanding of organ and tissue donation, and how to communicate it to others. I’ve always enjoyed creating videos and posters, and being able to use that passion to spread awareness made me feel genuinely proud of the impact I was helping create.
My three-week internship flew by faster than I expected – a sign of how engaging and meaningful the experience was. I’m truly grateful for everything I’ve learned and for the opportunity to be part of such impactful work. I look forward to continuing my support for the MOHAN Foundation and contributing to this important cause in the future.

Special thanks to the entire MOHAN foundation team for all the support and helping me navigate through everything 😉
